Earlier this week, Gustavo and I went to the zoo and a science museum since we were both free during the day. We both have annual zoo passes and if you're a San Diegan resident, there are certain museums you can get into for free on Tuesdays by simply showing your ID card so we took advantage of that and went to the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center! This museum is geared towards younger children and families but it's still a fun place to go to.
First off, we went to the zoo since it opened before the museum did. I actually have mixed feelings about this zoo because I generally do not support zoos as it's not fun for the animals to be locked up and held in captivity and some don't take care of their animals well but luckily our zoo is among the best in the world for taking care of endangered species and having enclosures as natural as possible to the animals' actual habitats.
I unfortunately don't have any pictures to share of them but we saw a number of Galapagos tortoises which we learned much about! One of the employees was giving us facts about them and even told us that Steven Spielberg's inspiration behind E.T. was one of the saddleback tortoises because of how it's neck stretched up! It's now at a different zoo, but still, interesting! I also learned that you can determine the sex of the hatchlings when they are in the eggs still based on temperature, so if the temperature is higher, it's a female but if it's lower, it's a male. I was also told that the oldest tortoise currently at the zoo is 125 years old!
This lil dude was just chilling. I find toads to be fascinating to look at; sadly, this one didn't have any info listed about it next to it's enclosure :-( It was in the "Native to California" area so that's all I know about it!
One of the workers told us that the zoo had a baby reindeer and we tried looking for it but couldn't find it! I think it was somewhere at the top so here's a big one instead!!
I love that our zoo has so many trees and plants everywhere.
Because the zoo is huge, there's a "skyfari" ariel tram inside so you can easily go from one side of the park to the other. You pass over other enclosures while being able to see Balboa Park and some of the buildings in downtown as well! It's quite beautiful if you aren't afraid of heights!
After we spent a few hours there, we walked on over to the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center where they were apparently having a special circus exhibit. I don't support the circus as well since many use animals for entertainment and harm them in the process but it was interesting to see what other humans were capable of doing with their bodies (I.E. contortionists, sword swallowing, etc.)
A couple of people were also building this structure with blocks similar to Jenga wood blocks and it was taller than me!
Do any of you guys have a favorite museum? Feel free to let me know in the comment area below! Thanks for reading and come again!!
